Stretching is essential in maintaining a healthy body and preventing injuries. Good flexibility helps to maintain adequate joint range of motion, without which muscles shorten and tighten. Furthermore, inflexible muscles are weak when called into action and can’t fully extend, thereby putting both the joint and muscle at risk of injury.
Research suggests that chronic back and neck pain can be improved and prevented from deteriorating by engaging in pilates and yoga on a regular basis. This is why we advocate that patients make use of these modalities or a stringent stretching programme at least twice a week.
Please note that during acute bouts of pain or in the initial phase of an injury treatment takes priority over stretching and a patient should discuss with their practitioner when it is appropriate to start a stretching regimen.
